Several years ago, I had a thought: It would be so fun to write a book for my son, Jack—a full-length novel we could read and enjoy together. Around the same time, a story idea arose from the ground of my being about a firefly. His name, Flash.
Flash can fly and emit light. I reckoned he would probably be cocky—I mean, I’d be cocky if I could fly and emit light. If he’s cocky, he would definitely get himself in a lot of trouble. Maybe he’d get trapped in a jar. Kids like to capture fireflies in jars, after all. Yes, and then he’d end up far from his home in the Appalachian Mountains…and find himself in an untamed desert. In Texas. Yeah, Texas! The Lone Star State. A cocky guy in a place whose motto is “Don’t mess with Texas!”—perfect.
And Flash realizes he must get home because he left things a mess there. Made some choices that led to a goon-squad of cold-blooded dragonflies taking over his hometown and enslaving the people there.
Deserts are tough. Those who make it out of the desert alive have unshakable purpose and strength, the ingredients of a hero. But Flash will need help. He’ll need friends. Friends who stir up hijinks at every turn of their journey…
My son is going to love this, I thought, as I typed away in the wee hours of many mornings.
Then, one day, I finished the book.
Jack and I read it together. If you want to experience a sublime joy, write a story for your child and read it with him—amazing!
And not long after, my publisher, Black Rose Writing, offered to publish Firefly: Let There Be Light, a middle grade adventure, so the entire world can read it.
I can’t wait to share Firefly with you on October 21, 2021.
